I only know this because one of the older games I play, Guild Wars, is also affected by this issue and we've figured out some workarounds while we wait for the developers to patch out the Windows Games Explorer dependency. Many older games suddenly refuse to start on Windows 7 because they're integrated into the Games Explorer service and waiting for a response from a Microsoft server that appears to have gone down some time around the 8th of June. If you want to play without commanding battles use option 1) and if you want to play battles personally use option 2) the only trick is you have to start the game with options in 1 save the game and then use options in 2).If so, your problem might be related to the Windows Games Explorer service having become dysfunctional in the past week.

it still makes multi tasking easier than playing it in full screen makes alt tabbing harder because i have to press escape to pop op the game menu so i can alt tab but this is the best i could do. this also disables aero theme and sets windows color to 16bit but in this mode you can command battles which is nice.

everything else works including movies.Дў) now if i were to set the directX emulation to 'none' then game will run in primary display driver and not on software which is a lot better for textures and interface+text but if you want to start a new game it will crash right before campaign screen. the only problem with this is that if you want to command battles the game will crash. i didn't make any changes anywhere, entered game path and just put my desired resolution ticked 'keep aspect ratio' and 'desktop center' and on the direct X 'emulation primary surface'. i do not have the steam version, i have a really old cd with shogun warlord edition and i managed to make it work in window mode.

This morning, after a reboot with windows updates, the situation is slightly different: the steam menu keep saying that I have video drivers not updated, the game is still working without DxWnd, but if I run DxWnd something strange happens: if I run the game from Steam, it crashes, if I run it from the DxWnd menu or simply double clicking Medieval_TW.exe it works.ДЎ) i have DXWnd version 2.03.84.fx1 and i am on windows 7 64. I wonder if Steam people did anything in the meanwhile: whoever has problems may compare its product release with mine (in the main menu page there's a 'v2.01 pe') and check for game updates?
